Is anything new on this front? Not with respect to the “for sale” sign ban, really, but there was a recent development that seems related in my mind.

As you may know, Oak Park was a party in a court case called McDonald v. Chicago. That case involved the question of whether Chicago’s (and Oak Park’s) gun ordinance was unconstitutional. However, to get to that question, the courts had to determine whether the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution applies to individual states (and cities and villages within individual states) via the Fourteenth Amendment. Not going quietly

The sector increasingly sees the government’s reforms as a threat to key social and academic values, as well as directly to university as a public and liberal institution, writes Peter Scott in the Guardian. He said that the initial sector response that there was ‘no alternative to the changes has given way to a far more defensive stance, as a result of the government’s growing unpopularity and new joined-up thinking which sees the fates of HE and the NHS as intrinsically connected. “Both are grand 20th-century social projects under neo-liberal fire” he writes.

Another reason for the change in views is simply “that the government’s reforms are now better understood”. He adds that “as a result, the contest is moving on to new ground. Very few people now expect these arrangements to produce an enduring settlement”.
